Norfolk Smuggling Gang
When You Were MineThe Norfolk Smuggling Gang is a ruthless criminal group operating along the Norfolk coast, whose increasing violence draws the authorities into a covert campaign against it. The gang’s importance to the story lies not only in the danger it poses to local people, but also in the mission against it: Peter is killed in the fighting, and the loss becomes inseparable from Isobel’s later sense of betrayal and grief.
Operations and the Secret Mission
The gang is described as running rife along the Norfolk coast, with its members growing more ruthless and people dying as a result. In response, the Prince Regent asks Dominic and Peter to undertake a secret mission. They are to rejoin some of their former battalion and form a special group to confront the smugglers. The operation is presented as urgent, dangerous, and difficult to predict in duration: Dominic tells Isobel that the two men may be away for weeks or months and will be unable to contact her while the mission is under way.
The Mission’s Cost
Dominic and Peter are sent to vanquish the smugglers, but the effort exacts a personal cost. Peter is slain during a fierce battle with the gang. Dominic survives; only a few days after leaving with Peter, he returns to his father’s estate in Berkshire and marries a woman to whom he had apparently been betrothed for some time. For Isobel, who had believed Dominic’s promises and accepted him into her life, the news combines Peter’s death with Dominic’s absence and apparent betrayal. The gang’s violence thus sets in motion consequences beyond the covert operation itself, devastating a family and altering Isobel’s understanding of the people closest to her.
Later Traces and Uncertainty
The smugglers also form part of the background to Dominic and Peter’s later search for Isobel. As they ride toward a village, the two men discuss whether a man withholding information might be associated with Rupert. They know Rupert was in the area at the relevant time, and the trails they have followed point there; they also note that the man has not returned to his former haunts since the middle of the previous month. Peter connects this uncertainty to Isobel’s kidnapping and suspects someone reached the man, but says they need more information about Sir Hubert Williams and his associates before acting. This conversation does not establish that the man is a member of the Norfolk Smuggling Gang or prove a connection between the gang and Rupert. It leaves the possibility of wider ties unresolved while showing how the threat of organized smuggling remains part of the danger surrounding the search.
